C'était Gurtweil, un petit village dans le sud-ouest de Baden, à quelques kilomètres seulement de la ville du district de Waldshut, à proximité de la frontière suisse, qui est devenu la ville natale du Père François Marie de la Croix Jordan, Fondateur de Salvatoriens. Père Jordan est né le 16 Juin 1848, deuxième fils de Laurent et Notburga née Peter. Le jour suivant sa naissance, il a été baptisé à l'église paroissiale sous le nom de Jean -Baptiste.
Etant né et éduqué dans une famille pauvre, il ne pouvait pas réaliser son rêve de devenir un prêtre, bien que comme un adolescent, il avait pris conscience de sa vocation au moment de sa première communion. Après avoir terminé l'école primaire, il avait travaillé comme ouvrier et peintre-décorateur, voyageant dans ce qui était alors l'Allemagne.
