Fr. Julian Guzman was born in Manhattan, New York, on 12 January 1935. In 1961, he entered the Society’s Novitiate in Colfax, Iowa, where he made his profession of vows on 8 September 1962. He completed his college studies at Divine Saviour Seminary in Lanham, Maryland, and Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, earning a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy in 1964. He continued his studies at Divine Saviour Seminary and Catholic University and ultimately was ordained a priest on September 8, 1968, at St. Mary’s Parish in Landover Hills, Maryland. He earned his master’s degree in Theology from Catholic University the following year. During his years of teaching, his students found Fr. Julian to be engaging and fair. With his sense of humour, hearty laugh, and love of stories, Fr. Julian was described as being down-to-earth and accessible. Those likeable qualities were equally seen by his parishioners when Fr. Julian moved into parish ministry. He also became known as a gifted preacher. On Sunday, 12 June 2022, Fr. Julian suffered a severe stroke. He died the following morning, 14 June at the age of 87. He was just three months shy of celebrating his 60th Anniversary of Profession as a Salvatorian, and the 54th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination.
