RIP: 09/07/2020 - Pelt
Fr. Miguel Grobben was born at Neerpelt on 14 January 1938. After having concluded his secondary studies at the Salvatorian College in Hamont, he joined the Society of the Divine Saviour by doing his novitiate in Passau in Germany. He professed his first vows on 8 September 1958 in Passau and was ordained a priest in Hamont on the Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, 29 June 1964. Inspired by St. John XXIII who made a general call to all the priests to go to South America to assist the faithful and the need of Salvatorian Missionaries for the then new mission in Caracas, Venezuela, Fr. Miguel went straight after his ordination to Caracas to live and work among the poor in the slums of the capital. He was the superior of the unit for 6 terms of office, i.e. 19 years, and founded together with the people of the slum a dispensary and a home for day care for elderly, which he dedicated to our Founder, Fr. Francis Jordan. After 55 years of faithful service, he was forced by his own health condition to return to Belgium, where he died in Pelt on 9 July 2020.
